2,000 Year Old Computer: Rebooted

Via Wired Gadget Lab:

A British museum curator has built a working replica of a 2,000-year-old Greek machine that has been called the world's first computer.

A dictionary-size assemblage of 37 interlocking dials crafted with the precision and complexity of a 19th-century Swiss clock, the Antikythera mechanism was used for modeling and predicting the movements of the heavenly bodies as well as the dates and locations of upcoming Olympic games.

the Fewture's Top 3 Albums of 2008

1. Kings of Leon - Only By The Night
2. Kanye West - 808 and Heartbreak
3. Raphael Saadiq - The Way I See It

And if the Fewture had heard 808 sooner, that may be different.

To that Chronicle reporter dude on KFOG this AM who wrote that Pop is Dead: Sure, pop is dead. Because there is no more pop. Everything is too fractionated to have that type of all engrossing, hypnotic, musical hold over the majority of a national or global audience--but that doesn't mean that there isn't music happening. These three artists are moving music forward. No doubt.

We live in a disposal culture, true. Yet innovation still exists.

Cadillac Records

the Fewture loves the blues, so Cadillac Records is a welcome look at 1950s blues culture.

According to Philly.com's Carrie Rickey:
In 1950, as the blues, gospel and jazz cross-pollinated but before Detroit's Motown, before Memphis' Sun and Stax - and well before Philadelphia International Records - there was Chicago's Chess label. Those of a certain age fondly remember its logo, a silhouette of a king chess piece flanked by those of bishop and knight.

Cadillac Records, Darnell Martin's boisterous, if not always factual, account of the house that Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Chuck Berry and Etta James built, is a variety show of the personalities and music that spawned the urbanization of the blues and midwifed the birth of rock-and-roll.

The cast includes Columbus Short, Mos Def, Tammy Blanchard, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Adrien Brody, Gabrielle Union, Jeffrey Wright, Beyoncé Knowles, Cedric the Entertainer, and Norman Reedus.

808 and Heartbreak

d says they've been calling it his Nebraska. I can see why.

Kanye West's new album, 808 and Heartbreak, along with Q-Tip's The Renaissance are probably the most artistic hiphop albums we've seen in the last five years.

Since Black Starr.

Aside from maybe the Roots, of course.

But honestly, Kanye may have just redefined hiphop. Right now the situation with hiphop's identity has become too complicated, so it's really too soon to say.

But Kanye may have just found the exit strategy.

That's the way the Fewture sees things.

Welcome to Heartbreak and Love Locktown are masterpieces.

This and The Kings of Leon's Only by the Night are the 2 08 albums of the year.

Get Kanye's now. Support art like this. He deserves it.

This one goes out to SV. We lost a beautiful woman yesterday. Dedicated to all the heartbreak.

Anyone who's ever seen clips of Bo Diddley and his band tearing it up on "Hey, Bo Diddley" and "Bo Diddley" in the 1966 movie The Big TNT Show knows The Duchess. The embodiment of tough-yet-graceful rock'n'roll cool, sharing a microphone with the equally glamorous Bo-ettes (Lily "Bee Bee" Jamieson and Gloria Morgan), she dominated the stage in a shiny ankle-length dress, churning primal chords and rhythms out of her Gretsch guitar that gave even Diddley a run for his money.

Update on Bush' Soul

President Bush has gone on record by stating he did not sell his soul during his presidency.

This comes amidst years of wild rumors that he had in fact sold his soul, and was attempting to drive the United States into the depths of hell.

According to a White House report regarding a StoryCorps oral interview conducted by President Bush' sister, Doro Bush Koch, Bush states:
I would like to be a person remembered as a person who, first and foremost, did not sell his soul in order to accommodate the political process. I came to Washington with a set of values, and I'm leaving with the same set of values.

MGMT - Electric Feel - Live from Abbey Road

Seriously. One of the Fewture's favorite songs.

As performed on Live from Abbey Road.

(Actual song starts up @ 1:30.)

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Ohhhh. So that's Katy Perry.

My lovely woman has been walking around singing 'I Kissed a Girl' for months. From what she says, she likes the beat and finds it catchy.

I'm actually not all that into the song. I have nothing against it. But I just find the rhythm to be somewhat of a trainwreck. Sorry, that's me.

But, anyone who knows me, knows that MGMT's Electric Feel is one of my favorite songs. And that I love every single remix/version I hear of it cause it adds just one more flavor to it.

So, one of my favorite versions, besides the Justice remix, is by this chick with this awesome voice. It's live, super smooth and chill but captures MGMT's funk feel to it.

Yeah. So I just Googled Katy Perry and thought I'd find some little known singer.

Hey. I never claimed to follow Pop trends in music.

German inmate escapes: by mail

I don't advocate prison escapes, but come on, you have to admit, this is both hilarious and ingenious.

As the BBC reports:

A manhunt is under way in western Germany for a convicted drug dealer who escaped by mailing himself out of jail.

The 42-year-old Turkish citizen - who was serving a seven-year sentence - had been making stationery with other prisoners destined for the shops.

At the end of his shift, the inmate climbed into a cardboard box and was taken out of prison by express courier. His whereabouts are still unknown.

The Disappearing Male: How We're Castrating Ourselves with Poisons

Our demise, should it come, will likely be the result of our own stupidity. The Doc Zone's documentary on The Disappearing Male is a great example of this.

Their video embedding isn't working, but you can check out the trailer or the entire film.
"We are conducting a vast toxicological experiment in which our children and our children's children are the experimental subjects." Dr. Herbert Needleman

The Disappearing Male is about one of the most important, and least publicized, issues facing the human species: the toxic threat to the male reproductive system.

The last few decades have seen steady and dramatic increases in the incidence of boys and young men suffering from genital deformities, low sperm count, sperm abnormalities and testicular cancer.

At the same time, boys are now far more at risk of suffering from ADHD, autism, Tourette's syndrome, cerebral palsy, and dyslexia.

The Disappearing Male takes a close and disturbing look at what many doctors and researchers now suspect are responsible for many of these problems: a class of common chemicals that are ubiquitous in our world.

Found in everything from shampoo, sunglasses, meat and dairy products, carpet, cosmetics and baby bottles, they are called "hormone mimicking" or "endocrine disrupting" chemicals and they may be starting to damage the most basic building blocks of human development.

Prop 8

As far as I'm concerned, the fact that Prop 8 passed is a complete injustice. Further, the fact that the Black population that came out for Obama 'voted overwhelmingly' to pass Prop 8 is an enormous contradiction.

Here's an insightful interview from the LA Times:
For Trebor Healey, a 46-year-old gay man from Glendora, Tuesday's election was bittersweet.

He was thrilled that the nation elected its first African American president. But he was disappointed that black voters, traditionally among the most reliably liberal in the state, voted overwhelmingly to ban same-sex marriage.

He understands that there are differences between the civil rights battles of blacks and gays: For one thing, he notes, gay people have a much easier time blending in. Still, he says, he thinks it's sad that "people do not equate one civil rights struggle with another."
And here's an even better bit by Jon Stewart:

Palin Didn't Know Africa is a Continent

This would be so hilarious! If it wasn't actually scary as hell.

So, the McCain campaign used Palin as a Hail Mary play (no Biblical pun intended) without proper vetting, she spent gads of money on clothes for herself and family, DIDN'T KNOW AFRICA WAS A CONTINENT (when her Presidential opponent was one generation removed from Africa), but she was defended (praised) by McCain--and is now talking 2012???

Seriously? The Republicans were cynical enough to make and sponsor this choice? And think she should continue as a national political figure?

Sounds like there's more and more Palin skits coming our way. Shame their Reality TV.

Africans elated by first black U.S. president - CNN.com

I think the reporting on the reaction of the world's public to Obama's win is amazing:
Africans elated by first black U.S. president - CNN.com: "Residents picked up the president-elect's half-brother Malik and carried him through the village, The Associated Press reported. 'Unbelievable!' Malik shouted, leading the family in chanting, 'Obama's coming, make way!'

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki called Obama's election 'a momentous day not only in the history of the United States of America, but also for us in Kenya. The victory of Senator Obama is our own victory because of his roots here in Kenya. As a country, we are full of pride for his success.'"

U.S. Helicopters Attack Inside Syria

CNN.com is reporting:
"(CNN) -- The U.S. military said it is investigating claims from Syria that U.S. helicopters based in Iraq killed eight people and wounded another Sunday in an attack inside Syria's territory Sunday.

Syria's state news agency SANA said four U.S. helicopters crossed the border and struck a farm about 8 kilometers (5 miles) inside Syria before returning to Iraqi airspace."
What I'm wondering is this: Why now?

Anyone think this is a ploy to swing last minute support towards Military McCain?

I sure hope no one is playing politics with the lives of our American soldiers. There better have been a strategic purpose to this endeavor. With a loose border, there better have been meaningful intelligence to warrant the possibility of creating further ill-will along Iraqi borders.

Right?

Several McCain advisers have suggested to CNN that they have become increasingly frustrated with what one aide described as Palin "going rogue."

"She is a diva. She takes no advice from anyone," said this McCain adviser. "She does not have any relationships of trust with any of us, her family or anyone else.

"Also, she is playing for her own future and sees herself as the next leader of the party. Remember: Divas trust only unto themselves, as they see themselves as the beginning and end of all wisdom."

Yes, I'm from Scranton

So SNL is wrong. Joe Biden's not the only one to make it out of Scranton. Besides myself, I know a few. Like d.

After talking about the problem with people in Pennsylvania, I just wanted to point out the fact that I am familiar with the area.

Here's SNL bashing Scranton in their spoof of the Biden/Palin debate.

(And by the way, there's plenty of stupid people all over the world. They're not exclusive to Pennsylvania. In PA, they're just tougher.)

The Problem with Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is where the American Revolution was brewed and battled. To this day, Pennsylvanians carry a mean streak of independent, rebellious attitudes that lead people (and keep them) in ignorance. When you constantly label differing views as 'anti-American,' as some less-enlightened leaders continue to spew, it seems the people most easily influenced by corporate media, the most stubborn, and least likely to engage in healthy discussion gravitate towards embracing fear-based--non-thought based--beliefs and notions.

Aside from the fact that there's no big mountains, this is the reason I moved away from Pennsylvania. It's greatest strength is also its biggest weakness: an irrational sense of righteousness.

When Republican talking points have been based on manipulating fear, you encite mob-like results where even well-meaning, good-natured people are perverted by the Republican propaganda and the corporate media coverage that allowed such vitriol to run un-checked for years. The only place these deluded notions have been consistently combated are in education institutions.

So, of course, that's why individuals like Karl Rove spin the public into resenting the 'elitist' and 'liberal' advocates of education, while maintaining the need for constant state of defense against terrorism.

This yeilds a partial populice with a paranoid, defensive, exclusionist, and dangerously disillusioned state of being.

The United States Divided

Why?

Some people aren't able to weigh issues. So they turn to guttural, fear-based reactions. Instead of lifting them up and working to educate people on the issues, the Republicans use these irrational talking points that relate only to some fantastical fear they've created in their mind and not to any actual fact or issue.

Here's Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-Minn.) sounding like a foolish, 7-year old girl who's adamantly adhering to something her 'Daddy' told her, and she's determined to prove that Daddy is right when she doesn't seem to understand the argument or the lack of logic in her position.

President McCain

After watching the end of tonight's debate, I realized something. McCain should have been president in 2000. That would have been the perfect time for him. He would have handled the 9/11 tragedy as well as Bush did. He would have done a far better job in going after Bin Laden.

There would have been no Iraq bullshit. I absolutely believe that McCain would have had the military hunt down Osama Bin Laden and then McCain would have killed Osama himself. He would have been the ultimate of all action heroes.

Unfortunately, that didn't happen. No telling the economic situation would be any different, but our world position would likely be much better.

Here's the thing: this is now. And this election, in 2008, Obama really is the right man for the job.

That's right.

The Fewture is officially endorsing Obama.

Big Insurer’s Spending Habits Disclosed - NYTimes.com

This article in the NYTimes makes me absolutely sick. I keep hearing people talking about a tax revolt. Now I understand why.
Big Insurer’s Spending Habits Disclosed - NYTimes.com: "A week after the insurance giant, the American International Group, received an $85 billion federal bailout, its life insurance subsidiary, AIG General, held a weeklong retreat for its top sales agents at the exclusive St. Regis Resort in Monarch Beach, Calif. Expenses for the week, lawmakers were told, totaled $442,000, including $200,000 for hotel rooms, $150,000 for food and $23,000 in spa charges.

In addition, the former A.I.G. executive who led the London-based division whose implosion is largely blamed for the insurance giant’s downfall, Joseph J. Cassano, continues to receive $1 million a month from the company, on top of the $280 million he received in the last eight years.

And even after A.I.G. reported $5 billion in losses in the final quarter of 2007, its chief executive at the time, Martin J. Sullivan, argued before a compensation committee that executives should receive performance bonuses. He received $5 million.

“This unbridled greed, this callous abuse of trust of hard-working Americans’ savings is just so disgusting it is hard to put into words, and the anger level in America is coming, as it often has, at Wall Street,' Representative Mark Souder, Republican of Indiana, said."

Fact Check: Palin Is Stupid

Millions of Americans are wondering: How stupid is Sarah Palin. They point to her inability to think of a newspaper she's read and non-sequitor, run-on responses as evidence of this trait.

Here's the thing: Palin is the super popular cheerleader who runs for class president. She makes stuff up, since she truly has no idea what she's talking about, then expects you to believe it due to the sheer force of her charm. You betcha!

But to imply that Obama would rather hang out with terrorists than 'see America as the greatest force for good in this world' is a truly stupid distraction technique. If the man is running for president, he has to believe that America is good and that he can help make it better. Everything else aside, this is what someone believes if they run for president. Motives can very widely, but even George Bush believed this.

So America, you are right. Palin is stupid. McCain has been using really wreckless tactics in navigating these last weeks of his campaign. I disagree with his politics, but he is an intelligent man. Palin is stupid. Plain-old stupid. A talent-show approach and a particular and precise diction can certainly be entertaining. But, comon, I don't know how it works where you're from in Alaska, but where I'm from, you don't shoot your mouth off right after getting put in your place. Especially if you get put in your place by a Scranton boy.

I mean, Sarah, think about it. Really. After getting killed by both press and personalities over your Katie Couric interviews, you managed to successfully make yourself look mildly cognizant during your debate with Joe Biden. Not bad. Not good, because you were outclassed, but not bad.

Then you immediately open the door for the press to slam you about inaccuracies all over again. That's like catching flies and pushing them into shit.

Please don't complain to us about the stink.

Via CNN:

Palin cited an article in Saturday's New York Times about Obama's relationship with Ayers, now 63. But that article concluded that "the two men do not appear to have been close. Nor has Mr. Obama ever expressed sympathy for the radical views and actions of Mr. Ayers, whom he has called 'somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8.' "

Several other publications, including the Washington Post, Time magazine, the Chicago Sun-Times, The New Yorker and The National Review, have debunked the idea that Obama and Ayers had a close relationship.

Barney Frank and Bill O'Reilly

We might have to start a Barney Frank Moments feature on this blog.

Here's Barney and Bill. Funny stuff. They could be a great comedy duo. Frank is the witty, somewhat easy-going Massachusetts intellect. Bill is the blubbering, barbaric, belligerent baboon.

Good times.

You have to respect Frank for not stooping to his level of emotional tirade and for going back at him with some insights for Bill to consider. Thing is, Bill's not very considerable. He's just overbearing.

Just because someone gets away with being overbearing--in fact, even if they make their living by being so--it doesn't mean they're actually right.

(If you click the video and visit the YouTube page, you can also laugh at the Republican supporters who seem to think that this is an effective way to communicate. O'Reilly's audience must consist of mostly divorced individuals and those that can't find a mate.)

Wall Street, Greed, and our Idiocracy

I've had credit crunches in my life. I called it 'grad school.' My friends and family bailed me out. The banks certainly didn't.

In my honest opinion, I believe this whole sitation could have been avoided if the banks had allowed people to readjust their mortgages to allow them to keep their homes if they were able to maintain the payments they were making before their ARMs ballooned. I had a brief stint in the mortgage industry 10 years. I never understood how this shit was not gonna hit the fan.

The power brokers in suits simply didn't care. They got greedy. So, I'm not really in favor of the bailout.

But I am in favor of Barney Frank. This was another great Barney Frank moment.

But it got me thinking, what if this bail-out was indeed done by people offering micro-loans in the amount and manner of their choosing, with a high rate of interest return. You know, like Kiva for our country.

Daryl Hall Rocks

You've got to check out Live From Daryl's House. This episode features Finger 11, and thus far Family Man and I Keep Your Memory have been the highlights for me. Daryl's the man. Good PA peeps.

Great series. Here's a super tight version of Family man performed with Chromeo.

Oasis is Taking it to the Streets

You can say what you want about Oasis. Good or bad, I'll most likely agree with you.

But you gotta admit, enlisting street performers to play their new songs around town--before they've even been released--is a pretty cool concept.

The new album is called "Dig Out Your Soul." Learn more about it at Creativity.

Hotel des Arts

Tonight I went to the Hotel des Arts at 477 Bush Street SF.

My friend d was part of the art exhibit. It was both surreal and fitting to go there and see art that used to hang in the living room of our place in the Mission.

Imagine an old Victorian-style hotel from any English film. Only packed full with modern, eye-popping art lining 4 floors of narrow, densely packed hipsters, arties, and a bunch of peeps that haven't fully made it back from Burning Man yet.

The best part was the Shephard Fairey room. That guy does some cool stuff. I loved way he plays off of iconographic type images. And the detail of the 'wallpaper' of the room was amazing. The way the black 'tiles' (that's what I'm calling them okay) fractured and collided with the red tiles in an organic way that was somewhat rippling was my favorite part of the night.

Cool stuff. Amazing scene.

Lots of great art. I was so impressed. Much fun. 30 minutes of mishing my way around and taking a bunch of pics. It was hot and constricted in there, so I was ready to jet after that.

On my way out, I finally ran into my gang. I wished d well, but it was too hot and crowded and I wasn't going back in.

Justice - D.A.N.C.E

Not sure how much I could listen to the song, but this video is cool as hell.

America's presidential race | The Palin effect | | The Economist

The Economist is about as close to objectivity as you can get. It doesn't care about party, it truly orients itself towards economics. It really is just my opinion, but I do feel they give it to you as straight as they can. I find myself reading other news sources less and less.

America's presidential race | The Palin effect | | The Economist: "Mr McCain has also been caught telling some straightforward fibs, for example that Mrs Palin, as governor, had “never” sought federal earmark money for her state—her request per head for Alaska was the biggest in the country. He and Mrs Palin continue to insist that she killed an infamous “bridge to nowhere” project in Alaska, even though every journalist in America now knows she did so only after supporting it, and only after it became a political albatross. Mr McCain has good reason to worry about his reputation for straight-talk, the strongest part of his political brand."
